A person wanting to become a U.S. permanent resident must have a medical exam by a doctor who is approved by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS). Only USCIS approved doctors, called civil surgeons, can complete an immigration medical exam.

HealthNet currently offers expedited immigration physicals for both children and adults. Expedited exams are an option for refugees, derivative asylees, and K1 Visa holders. Full immigration physicals will be available later this year.

What can I expect?

During the exam, the doctor will ask questions about your health and review your health history. The doctor will also perform a physical exam and look at any vaccine records you have with you. The doctor may order some blood or urine tests for infections like TB. It may take 3-7 days for these test results to come back.

After the exam, your I-693 form will be reviewed, signed, and sealed for your submission to USCIS. Your doctor may have to wait a few days for lab results or vaccines before the form can be signed.

Will I need vaccines?

Bring any vaccine records with you to your appointment. The doctor will review those with you and tell you if you need more vaccines. Some vaccines may be given at the health center. Other times, you might be referred to another location to get the vaccines your need.

What should I bring?

  • Each patient (adults and children) needs a government-issued photo ID.
  • Please bring any vaccine records or lab results.
  • You should bring an interpreter with you. HealthNet also offers interpreter services for many languages, including Spanish, Burmese, and Hakha Chin. If we do not have an interpreter for your language, you need to bring your own.

What is the cost?

You will need to pay for your exam in advance.

  • Expedited Exam – $75
