Program Overview

HealthNet’s postgraduate NP residency program is a full time, one year training program for newly graduated & certified Family Nurse Practitioners/Advanced Practice NPs. Program participants agree to a two-year commitment, one year as a resident and one as an independent primary care NP. It provides mentored clinical training, specialty rotations, procedure training, and formal didactic training in a high-volume complex and urban setting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are certain backgrounds preferred?
Yes. Preference is given to FNPs with an RN background in care across the lifespan in settings such as primary care, urgent care, or emergency departments.

I have NP experience, but want to transition into primary care. Can I still apply or is this program only for new graduates?
Yes, we look forward to reading your application. While the program is designed with new graduates in mind, we welcome applications from NPs with experience in other settings. In many cases, experience in urgent care or even retail health is viewed more favorably than a gap in clinical practice following graduation.

In what timeframe are applications considered?
Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, so early submission improves your chances. The application window runs from January through April. Interviews are typically conducted in February and March, with offers typically made by March.

Do you accept candidates with PMHNP, AGNPs, or other certifications.
This is a family practice residency that does not accept PMHNP applicants. While there is a behavioral health rotation, it is designed for primary care, not psychiatric specialization. FNPs receive priority consideration as we care for many children. AGNPs may be considered if they are willing and qualified to care for adolescent patients in addition to adults.

Am I guaranteed a position after residency?
NP residents sign a two-year agreement: one year in residency and one year of employment with HealthNet afterward. We hope our residents choose to build long-term careers with us beyond their commitment to their contract. While rare, if no FNP position is available at the end of the residency, the resident may be released. HealthNet is Indiana’s largest Federally Qualified Health Center, and we are committed to retaining our residents to support service growth.
