Indiana HIP Work Requirements: What Medicaid Members Need to Know

Changes are coming to Indiana Medicaid. Beginning January 1, 2027, work requirements will apply to certain adults ages 19–64 who receive coverage through the Healthy Indiana Plan, or HIP. Some HIP members will be exempt from the requirements.

If you have HIP, now is a good time to learn about the changes, make sure your information is up to date and begin gathering documents or information you may need.

You don’t have to figure everything out at once. Start by learning about the new requirements and using the tools provided by FSSA.

What Are the New Indiana HIP Work Requirements?

Some HIP members will need to meet new requirements to keep their coverage.

FSSA says HIP members can meet the requirement by completing 80 hours each month through qualifying activities such as:

  • Working
  • Going to school
  • Participating in job training, an apprenticeship or a work program
  • Volunteering in the community

Qualifying activities can be combined to reach the 80-hour requirement.

There are other ways to meet the requirement. FSSA says a HIP member also meets the requirement by earning $580 or more in a month.

Some HIP Members May Be Exempt

Not everyone with HIP will have to meet the work requirement.

Exemptions may apply for several reasons. For example, some people may be exempt because they are pregnant or recently had a baby, care for a child age 13 or younger, care for someone with a disability, have certain serious health conditions, receive Medicare, or participate in a drug or alcohol treatment program. Other exemptions may also apply.

If you think an exemption may apply to you, FSSA says you need to tell FSSA.

What Can You Do Now?

1. Start With Your FSSA Benefits Portal

Create or sign in to your FSSA Benefits Portal account. Make sure your contact information is current and that you can access your account. FSSA recommends that HIP members make sure their address and phone number are correct and create a Benefits Portal account.

This is also a good time to begin gathering documents and information related to your work, school, income or other circumstances that may be important to your coverage.

2. Use the HIP Work Requirements Pre-Screening Tool

Not sure whether the new requirements could apply to you?

FSSA offers a HIP Work Requirements Pre-Screening Tool to help you see whether you may be subject to or exempt from the work requirements.

The screening tool is a great place to start, but it does not guarantee an exemption.

Use the tool to get started, then look to FSSA for information about your individual requirements and exemption status.

3. Stay Connected

Don’t stop after using the screening tool.

Check your FSSA Benefits Portal regularly and watch your mail for notices from FSSA. Read the information you receive and follow FSSA’s instructions.
