Indiana and federal leaders approved Medicaid changes that may affect your health coverage. Some of these changes may start as early as July 1, 2026.

What May Happen

The Family and Social Services Administration (FSSA) may look more closely at Medicaid forms to make sure the information is correct and to see if you still qualify for coverage.

  • They may check details like your income, where you live, your job, who lives in your home, and your citizenship or immigration status.
  • FSSA may send letters asking for more information. You may need to send papers, update your information, or reply by a certain date to keep your coverage.

Key Dates

July 2026

  • Watch your mail for letters from FSSA
  • Indiana may start new reviews to see who still qualifies for Medicaid
  • You may lose coverage if your information is missing or out of date

October 2026

  • New eligibility rules being and some people may no longer qualify
  • There may be changes to the application, including immigration status and how household income is counted
  • Some information on your application may be shared with federal agencies
  • Indiana may start looking at past work activity

January 2027

  • New work rules for Medicaid begin
  • The state may check every 6 months to see if you still qualify

New Work Rules for HIP Medicaid

Some adults ages 19 to 64 with Healthy Indiana Plan (HIP) Medicaid may need to show that they work, volunteer, go to school, or take part in job training for at least 80 hours each month for the past 3 months. Some people may not have to follow these rules. This is called an exemption. It may include:

  • People who are pregnant of have just had a baby
  • Parents taking care of young children
  • People with serious health problems
  • Some caregivers
  • Some veterans

What You Can Do Now

  • Make sure FSSA has your current address and phone number.
  • Read all mail from FSSA right away. Some letters may not have your name on them.
  • Keep important papers in one safe place, like pay stubs or other proofs of income and photo ID or driver’s license.
