School-Based Services Makes a Difference in Young Lives

Always active and athletic, Monique Ray looked forward to playing volleyball as the school year approached.

Before the season began, she received an athletic physical through HealthNet’s School-Based Services. Although she looked healthy, Monique’s test results showed that she had many of the symptoms of diabetes. The school nurse encouraged her mother to take Monique to visit her primary care physician.

“The staff there probably saved her life,” said Mrs. Ray. Not only was Monique diagnosed with diabetes, but she was hospitalized for a week until doctors could bring her blood sugar levels under control.

Monique remains as active as ever, playing on her school’s volleyball and basketball teams. She’s learned how to care for herself and her diabetic condition thanks to ongoing visits with HealthNet’s school-based services staff.
