Now in its ninth year, the Health Care Heroes award program recognizes individuals and organizations who contribute to excellence in health care in Central Indiana.

Dr. Virginia Caine, director of the Marion County Health Department, nominated HealthNet for the honor. “Most people don’t even know the name, but HealthNet is truly one of this community’s most successful and important non-profits,” said Dr. Caine.  “They are on the front lines of health care, rolling up their sleeves and delivering quality care inside the city’s most underserved neighborhoods.”

The community achievement in health care award honors a company or organization that has successfully implemented a program that has addressed an acknowledged problem in health care administration or delivery. HealthNet received the top award for its 40 years of providing exceptional care to the uninsured and underinsured in Indianapolis.

HealthNet’s providers and staff are focused on making a difference, and great things are happening,” said Booker Thomas, HealthNet’s president and CEO.  “Our patients expect and deserve the best care, and we’re proud to be setting the standard for quality.”

For more than 40 years, HealthNet has been a mainstay in the Indianapolis community. Through its network of five community-based health centers, an OB/GYN care center, a pediatrics/adolescent care center, and eight school-based clinics, HealthNet annually serves over 42,000 individuals and families. More than 71 percent of HealthNet’s patients live below the federal poverty level.

HealthNet services include: family practice/internal medicine, pediatrics, OB/GYN, podiatry, optometry, dental services, Healthy Families and Better Indy Babies, a Homeless Initiative Program, school-based services, counseling, outreach and support services.

HealthNet’s health centers include Barrington Health Center, Care Center at the Tower, Martindale-Brightwood Health & Dental Center, Pediatric & Adolescent Care Center, People’s Health & Dental Center, Southeast Health & Dental Center, Southwest Health Center, and Southwest OB/GYN Annex.
