Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service Opportunity

Winter Clothing Drive for HealthNet's Homeless Initiative Program

1/11/2018

Celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with free admission, performances, programs and more on Jan. 15 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana History Center, 450 W. Ohio St., sponsored by HealthNet.

In addition to free programs and performances, guests are invited to donate new or gently-used cold-weather items (hats, gloves, socks, coats, hand warmers) for HealthNet's Homeless Initiative Program as a part of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. National Day of Service. Donation bins will be located in the lobby of the History Center through Jan. 15.

The winter clothing drive is in honor of HealthNet Optometrist Jill Buck and her sons Branson and A.J. who were killed in a multi-car crash in 2015.

From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., visitors will also be invited to weave mats and pack care packages to benefit the Homeless Initiative Program’s street outreach team, with items provided by Target, Hilton and the Gentle Dentist.

Since 1988, HIP has helped thousands of Indianapolis’ homeless by providing a network of services to treat the whole person, as he or she moves from homelessness into housing, employment, and self-sufficiency. Through a multi-disciplinary approach, HIP coordinates housing, intensive case management, employment and training services, health care, and outreach, for the homeless in Marion County. Over the past 30 years, HIP has become one of the largest and most comprehensive care programs for the homeless in the state.
