Chief Medical Officer Announces Plans to Retire in January 2019

Dr. Don Trainor has announced that he plans to retire from his role as HealthNet’s Chief Medical Officer in January 2019, after 14 years of remarkable service with HealthNet. As he nears full retirement, he looks forward to continuing to see HealthNet patients, including rounding on newborns, and coordinating HealthNet’s provider recruitment a few days a week beginning in January.
Dr. Trainor has been planning toward this moment for the past two years and feels the timing is right. Although he leaves big shoes to fill, we congratulate Don as he moves on to this next phase of life and appreciate his willingness to continue serving patients. His contributions to our organization have truly been exceptional.
Dr. Trainor has been with HealthNet for 28 years in various roles, and began his work as Chief Medical Officer in 2005. During this time HealthNet’s provider staff tripled, from 60 providers to now over 150 Physicians, Advanced Practice Nurses, Therapists, Dentists, and other Providers. This includes the addition of Psychiatrists and Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners to HealthNet’s Medical Staff and the expansion of resident continuity clinics to 6 HealthNet locations.
Service growth under Dr. Trainor’s leadership has included numerous expansions, including the addition of the Pediatric and Adolescent Care Center, West Health Center, and Northeast Health Center. The number of patients we serve has grown 37 percent, from 38,300 to more than 60,000 a year.
Thanks to Dr. Trainor’s leadership, HealthNet became one of a handful of community health centers across the country focused on becoming wired for better patient care in 2009 with the implementation of an Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system across all HealthNet locations. HealthNet’s early adoption of EMR also enabled us to be among the first health care providers in the state to take advantage of new federal Meaningful Use incentives to support health information technology.
HealthNet has garnered numerous recognitions under Dr. Trainor’s tenure, including 12 successful Joint Commission site visits (Ambulatory/PCMH and Laboratory); being the first in Indiana and among 30 organizations in the U.S. to earn the Joint Commission’s Primary Care Medical Home Accreditation; being among the top 7 percent of Federally Qualified Health Centers nationwide to earn a perfect score twice in a row during a HRSA Site Review; and receiving a HIMSS Davies Award for using health information technology to substantially improve patient outcomes. In addition, his leadership has led to all-time high scores in patient satisfaction and improved clinical results. I hope you will join me in thanking him for his many contributions to HealthNet!
Succession planning has been an ongoing strategic priority of our Board of Directors. A search committee will begin a national search later this month, with interviews to be conducted this fall. A successor is expected to be selected by the end of the year. Dr. Trainor will work closely with the new CMO, Senior Leadership Team, and Provider Co-Leaders to ensure a smooth transition.
This is an exciting time in HealthNet’s history. Our vision is to provide world class quality in community health care. As one of the largest Federally Qualified Health Centers in the state and the U.S., we have the opportunity to continue to lead at the local, state and national levels in our clinical quality practices and in finding innovative ways to improve health outcomes and reduce barriers to efficient, affordable health care. We look forward to continuing Dr. Trainor’s leadership legacy and setting a new standard for the delivery of compassionate health care and support services, regardless of someone’s ability to pay.
