Partnership Brings New Community Health Center to Indianapolis' Far Eastside
(INDIANAPOLIS, July 25, 2011) –Thanks to a $200,000 gift from The Glick Fund, a fund of the Central Indiana Community Foundation, HealthNet has opened a satellite community health center on the Far Eastside in partnership with the Community Alliance of the Far Eastside (CAFE).
HealthNet Eastside Health Center is located in newly renovated space within CAFE’s Far Eastside Neighborhood Center, 8902 E. 38th St. An open house will be held on July 28 from 4 to 8 p.m. as part of CAFE’s annual Community Day celebration.
The new health center is expected to serve more than 2,000 patients a year, many living below the federal poverty level. The 1,300-square foot health center designed by Halstead Architects has six exam rooms, a laboratory, and private offices. Initially, the center will offer pediatric and OB/GYN services only. Services will be expanded in the coming months to include adult primary care needs, as well as behavioral health services.
Pediatric services offered include well-child check-ups, back-to-school immunizations and physicals, sick-child care, and, care for chronic childhood conditions such as asthma, allergies and diabetes. OB/GYN services include prenatal care, basic gynecological procedures, women’s health check-ups (breast exams, pap smears), family planning and free pregnancy tests.
Patients also benefit from social work services, a completely electronic medical record system, bilingual staff members (Spanish-English) and state-of-the-art medical equipment.
“We are so thankful to be able to collaborate with CICF, the Glicks and CAFE on this initiative,” said HealthNet President/CEO Booker Thomas, MHA. “Working together, we look forward to bridging the gap of much needed health care services on the Far Eastside. We hope this health center will become a true medical home for the residents of this community – a place where people feel comfortable coming for high quality care that is accessible and affordable, right in their neighborhood.”
The health center’s hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Mondays and Fridays and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday. Same-day appointments are available. Medical services are delivered regardless of ability to pay, and the cost of care is based on a sliding fee scale and family income.
“This is a great day for our community,” said Melissa Drew, CAFE’s executive director. “We are excited to be able to offer additional services through the Far Eastside Neighborhood Center. The addition of health services makes the center a true one-stop facility for residents in our community.”
“CICF and the Glicks are honored to work with HealthNet and CAFE on such a meaningful project that benefits the Far Eastside community,” added CICF President Brian Payne.
